When the new home isn’t ready yet

Furniture storage: a safe place for your things until you need them

Many people need furniture storage at a moment of transition: the old lease has ended and the new home isn’t handed over yet, the family is travelling for several months, or the house is being renovated. Then the key question is: where will my furniture stay, and in what condition will it come back?

With SaudiMoving you say what you want to store, roughly for how long and in which city, and your request reaches movers and storage providers in your city who contact you with offers — many offer moving, packing and storage together.

Types of furniture storage

  • Storage in the company’s warehouse

Your furniture is wrapped and stacked in the mover’s warehouse, and brought to your new home when you need it.

  • A closed storage unit

A lockable room or unit of your own, rented monthly, accessible during the facility’s hours.

  • Short storage between two homes

For days or weeks when move-out and move-in dates don’t match.

  • Long-term storage

For months while travelling or working in another city — needs stronger packing and checks.

  • Storing part of your furniture

What won’t fit the new home, or pieces you’re keeping for later.

  • Transport to and from storage

Most companies offer it with storage, or it’s arranged separately. See home moving.

How storage works, step by step

Storage starts with a clear inventory: every piece and box with its number, one copy for you and one for the company. Large furniture is then dismantled and wrapped more heavily than for a normal move, because dust, damp and pressure affect it over time. See packing.

In the warehouse things are stacked so heavy loads never sit on weak pieces, and items you may need stay at the front. When you collect, compare the inventory with what arrives and check the condition before you sign for it.

Read what to know before you store furniture.

Short and long storage differ in the details: a few days between homes needs only normal moving packing and an inventory, while months of storage need stronger wrapping, perfectly clean and dry furniture, a ventilated or air-conditioned warehouse and, if possible, a check visit. Ask how pieces are stacked — furniture carrying weight for months can warp.

What to prepare before storage

  • Clean and fully dry furniture before wrapping — trapped damp causes smells and stains.
  • Empty and dry the fridge and washing machine, and leave them slightly open.
  • Don’t store food, flammable materials or important papers.
  • Photograph valuable furniture before handing it over.
  • Keep the inventory and a copy of the contract somewhere safe.

Common storage problems

  • Damp and smells

From wrapping damp furniture or a poorly ventilated warehouse. Ask about the warehouse conditions.

  • Missing items

Without a signed inventory, any loss is hard to prove. Don’t hand over your things without one.

  • Difficult access

Some warehouses only allow access by appointment. Ask before signing if you’ll need things during storage.

  • Unclear charges

Such as in/out fees or extensions. Get all of it in writing.

Questions to ask the storage provider

  • Is it a shared warehouse or a closed unit of my own?
  • Is the warehouse air-conditioned or well ventilated, and how is it protected against pests and damp?
  • Is there an inventory signed by both sides?
  • Can I reach my things during storage, and how?
  • What happens if something is damaged in storage? Is there cover?
  • How is it priced — per month, by volume or by space — and what are the extension and termination terms?

Duration

Long-term storage is usually priced monthly and may differ from short stays.

Type of facility

Closed, air-conditioned units differ from a shared warehouse.

Transport and packing

Furniture storage FAQ

Can I store furniture for just a week?

Yes, with many companies — especially between two homes. Give the approximate duration in the request.

Are warehouses air-conditioned?

Not all of them. Ask if you’re storing wooden furniture or appliances for a long time over the summer.

Can I take things out during storage?

In closed units usually yes, during the facility’s hours; in shared warehouses it may need an appointment and a fee.

What can’t be stored?

Food, flammable materials, animals, plants, important papers and jewellery.

Do you provide storage yourselves?

No. We pass your request to movers and storage providers in your city; the contract is directly between you and them.

Can stored furniture be moved to another city?

Yes — furniture can go from the warehouse straight to your new home in another city. Mention it when agreeing, and read about moving between cities.
